Ignorance is no excuse

Students are obligated to familiarize themselves with the regulations that apply to taking examinations at Nord University, including permitted examination aids and the rules for the use of sources and citations. If the rules are violated, the student may come under suspicion for cheating or attempted cheating.

Supplementary Provisions for Examination Candidates at Nord University: Students are obliged to familiarize themselves with the guidelines that apply to taking examinations at Nord University.

Serious consequences

The consequences of cheating or attempted cheating may be annulment of the examination and suspension from Nord University, as well as the loss of the right to take examinations at other universities and university colleges in Norway for up to one year.

Cheating or attempted cheating is serious. It shows disloyalty to fellow students and is considered to be a gross breach of trust in relation to the educational institution and society.

Lack of knowledge concerning the use of sources, permitted aids and the regulations for taking examinations does not relieve students of their liability.

What constitutes cheating?

Cheating is discussed in Section 9 of the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at Nord University concerning cheating, annulment, suspension and expulsion.

The following constitutes an act of cheating or attempted cheating:

  • Presenting the published or unpublished works of others as one's own.

  • Presenting one's own earlier work, including work used in an examination or other assessment, without proper source referencing.

  • Quoting sources or otherwise using sources in written work without proper source referencing.

  • Any non-regulation collaboration with other examination candidates or groups.

  • Having non-permitted aids available during an examination. If the examination includes an inspection of examination aids prior to commencement of the examination, this applies correspondingly if non-permitted aids are discovered during the inspection.

  • Unlawful fabrication of data in connection with student work.

  • Acting in violation of specific guidelines for an individual examination.

An inspection of permitted aids will be carried out for school examinations. If non-permitted aids are discovered, it may be considered attempted cheating.

Electronic plagiarism detection

For unsupervised examinations, Nord University uses electronic plagiarism checking to identify concurrence between the text of the work submitted and other sources. All text documents submitted in Inspera are checked by a plagiarism monitor.
