Programme description

The Bachelor of Nursing programme aims to educate professional nurses who are qualified to provide nursing in all parts of the health services. The programme aims to educate independent, responsible and reflective nurses. Nurses educated in Trøndelag shall be characterised as clinically competent practitioners with a strong nursing identity who dare, who want to and who are able to.

This means that nurses

- face professional, ethical and interpersonal challenges

- take responsibility for and contribute to people's health, as well as their own and others' development

- conduct nursing services based on knowledge, the value foundation of nursing and their skills

THE VALUE FOUNDATION OF NURSING

Nursing education is based on a view of humans that starts from the point that every person is unique and woven from biological, psychical, social and spiritual dimensions, and the overall whole is more than the sum of its dimensions. The reason for nursing lies in respect for each individual's life and its inherent dignity. Nursing builds on compassion, care and respect for human rights, and the nurse is to promote health, prevent disease, ease suffering and ensure a dignified death. The nurse holds a professional, ethical and personal responsibility for his/her own actions and assessments in nursing and carries a responsibility for acquiring knowledge of current legislation regulating nursing services.

VIEW ON KNOWLEDGE AND LEARNING

Nursing is a profession as well as a scientific discipline. The knowledge foundation of nursing is comprised of nursing-professional experience-based and research-based knowledge, knowledge of ethics, natural science knowledge and knowledge of humans, society and health. Through the nursing programme, the student develops basic competence in the field of the profession. Competence is an expression of professionally relevant knowledge and skills and general competence based on the value foundation of nursing. The nursing programme builds on a view of learning where learning implies acquisition of new or changed competence that provides lasting changes in a person¿s behaviour. Learning processes are both individual as well as related to action and interaction with others.

Learning with the aim of acquiring the competence of this profession among others means that the student:

- learns about him/herself in the role of nurse and acquires the skills of the profession

- gains knowledge of theory

- reflects on theory and experience through observation, analysis, consideration and critical evaluation

- participates in the programme's social and cultural context where the student creates a good learning environment in cooperation with fellow students, teachers, supervisors and others.

THE NURSE'S CORE COMPETENCE

Nursing, care and treatment are the cornerstones of a nurse's competence. The nurse:

- Meets the patients' need for nursing

- Starts from the individual person's experience of disease or health failure as well as each person's resources and opportunities

- Conducts nursing in cooperation with patients and dependents and in interdisciplinary collaboration

- Conducts nursing based on observation and professional assessment that provide the best possible health and quality of life for patients and dependents

- informs, teaches and supervises patient and dependents, co-workers and students

- possesses competence in health promoting and preventive work and has basic knowledge of research and professional development

demonstrates ability to organise and lead nursing services at various levels

- has knowledge of the construction and tasks of health services, as well as knowledge of health policy priorities as well as the legal framework for the profession

- demonstrates appreciation of different cultures

- demonstrates professional ethical attitudes

 

The programme consists of theoretical, dialogue-based and practical work and learning forms that support each other. The student develops professional and personal competence in nursing through his/her attending the learning situations facilitated. The programme thus has mandatory attendance requirements.

The student is expected to:

- work the amount of hours equivalent of a full-time study programme

- attend and actively participate in the learning activities provided by the University

- act in accordance with professional ethical nursing guidelines

- be engaged, solution-oriented, and to cooperate with Nord University in the further developing of the nursing programme through actively using student democracy

Preparation before and reflection on professional praxis studies

 

Professional praxis studies in cooperation with patients and dependents:

Professional praxis studies in direct cooperation with patient and dependents comprises 75 ECTS credits. In professional praxis studies, students work with experienced nurses and others in meeting people who are in need of nursing. Professional praxis studies are supervised. Nord University allocates praxis placements. Students are not at liberty to provide their own placements. The professional praxis studies are mainly conducted in Northern Trøndelag. The nursing programme also offers some professional praxis studies abroad. The organising as well as other regulations related to the professional praxis studies are described in a separate document.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the programme, the student:

 

Knowledge

  • Has thorough knowledge of key themes, theories and issues in nursing and nursing sciences
  • Has knowledge of medical, natural science and social science issues
  • Has knowledge of the history, tradition and character of nursing
  • Has knowledge of research and development work relevant to nursing

Admission requirements

  • Minimum fem årsverk relevant arbeidserfaring.
    • Arbeid innen helse-, sosial-, omsorg- og undervisningssektor eller lignende der søker har arbeidet med pasienter, klienter eller elever.
    • Førstegangstjeneste og omsorg for egne barn kan godkjennes som inntil ett års arbeidserfaring.

Må dokumentere kunnskaper i norsk (tilsvarende vg2-nivå yrkesfag) og matematikk (tilsvarende vg1-nivå yrkesfag).

Job opportunities

Qualified nurses have a wide range of career options, including work in: municipal health services, public and private hospitals, institutions abroad, within offshore, in conflict and disaster areas, in secondary school systems, university colleges and universities. Graduates of the Bachelor in Nursing at Nord University satisfy the professional requirements for all EEA countries.

Further education

Successful completion of the bachelor's programme in nursing at Nord University qualifies candidates to apply for relevant master's programmes at Nord University as well as at other educational institutions. Nord University also offers a wide range of relevant further education opportunities, including a PhD programme in Studies of Professional Praxis.

Study abroad

In a global world, knowledge of epidemiology and cultural competence are required in order to provide nursing care to people of various ethnical, religious and cultural background. Internationalisation is an integral part of this nursing programme through professional education and research collaborations with international partner institutions as well as exchange of students and staff.

The Bachelor of Nursing programme in Trøndelag cooperates with approximately 20 institutions in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America, and is a participant in the Erasmus+, Nordsam and Nordhelse networks. This provides our students with the opportunity to take parts of their education abroad.

We offer practical studies as well as the course "SPU235 Nursing Care and Society - National and International Perspectives" to students from our partner institutions. Teaching on this course can be delivered in English should there be foreign students enrolled.

Costs

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.

Students should also expect costs for accommodation, travel etc. to incur in relation to praxis placement periods.

Students must possess their own laptop computer and any relevant digital communication devices needed, and cover their own expenses for this.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

If the applicant does not fulfil the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfil the admission.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Coursework and exams are assessed and graded based on the Norwegian system using letters A to F, in which A is the best/highest grade and F equals fail or not passed. Work may also be assessed based on a passed/not passed or approved/not approved basis.

Programme evaluation

Student democracy at Nord University aims to secure active student participation a.o. through class time for discussions, reference groups, student representatives, the student organisation and student representation on relevant committees. Study programme evaluation is part of our work on quality in education and further development of the programme. Evaluation of this programme takes place a.o. through individual evaluation as well as in reference groups. Students are expected to actively using student democracy and contributing to further development of the Bachelor of Nursing programme through participating in evaluation of each respective course.
