Learning outcomes


Students shall:

  • have foundational knowledge of the sound structures, word patterns, and grammatical structure of the English language as well as insight into the cultural conventions for its use
  • have knowledge of English as a world language and its developing role as a contact language for people from different countries and cultures, as well as its importance in internationalization in education and the workplace
  • have knowledge of and can distinguish between literary genres, as well as conventions of academic writing, including responsible use of secondary sources and research ethics
  • have knowledge and understanding of English in a holistic, cultural context
  • have insight into the possibilities for the subject's role in developing interpersonal communication, values, respect, and tolerance
  • have knowledge of strategies for textual, linguistic, cultural, and analytical approaches to literature and other texts
  • have knowledge of modern literary theory
  • have knowledge leading to personal and academic maturation
  • have increased knowledge and understanding of language as a phenomenon



  • have the ability and expertise to further their professional development in English within our present academic structure
  • can analyze and write research-based articles on literary texts, and also apply precise and customized concepts in working with texts
  • can explore society, history, and expressions of English-speaking countries
  • can use both oral and written English functionally and confidently

Career possibilities

The package can be incorporated into full degree Bachelor programmes. It also facilitates professional language and communication development for professionals working across a range of fields in both the public and private sectors, including communication, tourism, culture, education and social work.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

If the applicant does not fulfill the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevent to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfill the admission requirements.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

The Norwegian system for grading and assessment using the letter grades A - F, in which A denotes the best/highest grade and F denotes "not passed". Grades can also be awarded as "passed", "not passed", "approved" and "not approved".

Assessment methods

Compound assessment, written school examination, written home examination, portfolio, oral examination, participation.

Programme evaluation

The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme director. The evaluations form a part of the University's quality assurance system.
