Programme description

This study programme provides basic knowledge in biological topics including ecology, evolution, biodiversity, botany, genetics as well as basic chemistry, mathematics and statistics. In some courses the students participate in lab and field activities. It is possible to continue with a MSc in Aquaculture or Marine Ecology after finishing this Bachelor's programme in biology.

  • One-Year Programme in Biology and chemistry is equivalent to the first year of Bachelor in Biology, and you can continue directly to the bachelor's program without loss of time.
  • To qualify for the special requirements needed (Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/Biology), the study programme Foundation Year can be included as the first year of Bachelor of Science in biology. This means that you after Foundation Year can proceed directly to the second year of BS in biology without loss of time. There will be some limitations in elective courses.

You can choose to specialize in the direction of Marine Ecology, Biotechnology or Arctic Biology.
The latter is arranged at Svalbard by the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).

Whale safari and other field excursions
The county of Nordland offers amazing opportunities for the study of biology. Species including killer whales, sperm whales, sea-eagles, Atlantic puffins and seals make up just a part of the huge range of wildlife present in the region. Field observations of such species are a compulsory part of the study including a whale safari around Andøya.

On successful completion of the programme:

The candidate should:

  • Have broad knowledge of key theory, problems, tools and methods in the field of biology
  • Have knowledge of basic research in the field of biology

  • Understand the ethical challenges involved in the field

The candidate should:

  • Be able to apply biological knowledge in analysis of biological problems
  • Be able to locate, assess and refer to scientific information from a broad range of sources and make reasoned choices.
  • Be able to reflect on his/her academic performance and adjust this under supervision

General competence
The candidate should:

  • Show understanding of key areas of research in biology
  • Be able to convey biological knowledge as theories, research questions, and research results - both orally and in writing.
  • Be able to exchange views and knowledge with other biologists in a way that contributes to further development of biological knowledge.

Mathematics R1 or Mathematics S1 and S2, plus one of the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics (1 and 2), Chemistry (1 and 2), Biology (1 and 2), Information technology (1 and 2), Geosubjects (1 and 2) Technology and research subjects (1 and 2).

If the applicant does not fulfill the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevent to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfill the admission requirements.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

The Norwegian system for grading and assessment using the letter grades A - F, in which A denotes the best/highest grade and F denotes "not passed". Grades can also be awarded as "passed", "not passed", "approved" and "not approved".

Assessment methods

Assessment consists of school exams, portfolio assessment, practical and oral examination.

Graduation requirements

In order to graduate, students must have completed all compulsory course units (120 ECTS) and a specialization worth 30 ECTS, in addition to elective courses worth 30 ECTS.

Programme evaluation

Students take an active part in the evaluation of the courses in the programme through mid-term and final evaluation. Dialogue meetings are also conducted between students and the programme director every semester.
