Biochemistry and Cell Biology


Course description

Biochemistry: Detailed knowledge on biological macromolecules' structure, respiration, fermentation, and basic knowledge of photocythesis. Cell membranes and intracellular structures (organelles). Emphasis will be put on the functions of cells and organelles. Organelles will be looked upon in the light of evolution. The cell as the smallest living unit. Mitosis, meiosis and cell cycle. Signalling pathways.


No fees except semester registration fee and course literature.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge The student:

  • Has a broad knowledge of the concept of cells as the smallest living unit, their structure and function.
  • Has knowledge of basic bio-chemistry, with emphasis on respiration and biological macromolecules.
  • Is familiar with basic research fields in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry.


Skills The student:

  • Can apply relevant theoretical knowledge to the performance of simple laboratory tasks.
  • Knows how to scientifically report, using proper cell biology and biochemistry terminology, results obtained from basic cell biology experiments.
  • Can collect and use relevant published information for the interpretation of observations obtained from cell biology experiments.
  • Can reflect upon their observations obtained after performing basic cell biology techniques.


General competence The student:

  • Has knowledge and understanding of the risks when working in a cell biology laboratory.
  • Can communicate results and theories in writing.
  • Is familiar with new thinking and innovation processes in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry.

Course type

Compulsory: BSc in Biology, Joint Bachelor Degree in Animal Science


Admission to the course follows the admission requirements of the study program Bachelor in Biology and Bachelor in Animal Science.

Teaching activities and methods

4 hours every week for approx. 13 weeks. Lectures and group discussions. 3 times 4-hour laboratory practice sessions

Recommended prior knowledge

Basic knowledge in chemistry such as KJ100F Basic Chemistry.

Exam description

Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.

Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3

To accommodate this, the form of assessment will be changed from Written school examinaiton (4 Hours, letter grade) to Home examination (3 Hours, pass/fail) on this course in the spring of 2020.
