Programme description

The Bachelor of English programme is an academic programme for students wanting to explore English language, literature, culture and history. The programme emphasises linguistic and in particular literary subjects and provides a thorough introduction to these, well as prepares students for further English language education on master's degree level.

The first year of this programme consists of four courses comprising 15 ECTS credits each. These four are English Language; American Studies; British Studies; and Scientific Method, Research and Communication.

The second year of the programme consists of a specialisation in English comprising 20 ECTS credits, the topics of which vary from one year to another, as well as 20 credits of other mandatory topics. The last component is a bachelor's thesis comprising 20 ECTS credits, to be written on a subject chosen by the student in consultation with his or her supervisor.

The third year of study consists of elective courses comprising 60 ECTS credits in total. Students may choose from a wide range of relevant courses at Nord University. Many students choose to spend their third study year abroad, and Nord University encourages their doing so. The university has agreements with a series of partner institutions abroad and also offers participation in exciting exchange programmes, for instance in Japan and the US.

Upon successful completion of this programme, the candidate:


  • Has knowledge of the structure and linguistic tools of texts, and of critical and analytical approaches to literature as well as other texts
  • Has knowledge of genres and their key characteristics, norms for academic text production, responsible use of sources and privacy issues
  • Has knowledge of contemporary literature theory
  • Has knowledge of the social life, history and a broad range of cultural expressions in English-speaking countries, including key works in English language literary tradition


  • Has a confident and appropriate use of English orally and in writing, in different situations and genres, using the language with precision, flow and context.
  • Can analyse and write research-based articles about literary texts, and apply precise and appropriate terms when working with texts
  • Can explore public life, history and cultural expressions in English-speaking countries
  • Can work independently with various issues in English

General competence:

  • Can maintain and develop his or her own English language competence
  • Can adjust academic material and language to his or her target audience

Job opportunities

The Bachelor in English provides knowledge and skills that are in demand in the public and private sectors, and in a range of occupations. It can be combined with further studies to qualify students for pedagogical positions. Other relevant career paths include the cultural sector, media, management and tourism.

Further education

Completion of the Bachelor of English degree qualifies graduates for continued education in Practical Pedagogical Education (PPU) and for continued academic study at the Master level.

Study abroad

Students are encouraged to go on an international exchange during the third year of this programme, for instance to one of Nord University's partner institutions in Japan or the US. The university has different exchange programmes.

This programme is open to international students at Nord University. Please note that excellent English language skills are expected from students, ideally exceeding the formal minimum requirements.


No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.

There will also be a study trip to the University of York, England. Estimated costs for this trip are NOK 6,500 plus food, transportation etc. UPDATE: Due to the coronavirus, the trip to The Norwegian Study Centre in York (NSC), planned for the autumn of 2020, will not take place. Instead, the NSC will organize a 1-week online course, compulsory and free of charge for you as a student.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

If the applicant does not fulfil the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfil the admission.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Coursework and exams are assessed and graded based on the Norwegian system using letters A to F, in which A is the best/highest grade and F equals fail or not passed. Work may also be assessed based on a passed/not passed or approved/not approved basis.¿>We further refer to the legislation, regulations and guidelines applicable.

Assessment methods

A combination of portfolio assessment, obligatory assignments, home exams, written school exams, and oral exams.

Graduation requirements

The final graduation examination for the study programme is the Bachelor thesis (SP240L).

Programme evaluation

There will be an internal evaluation of the programme at the end of the term. In addition, we ask that students take part in centrally administered evaluation.
