Becoming a Visiting Research Fellow

The Faculty of Education and Arts is regularly approached by PhD students from different parts of the world who wish to spend a period of time working at Nord University.

Are you a PhD student working on your thesis, with permission from your university to come to Nord University in order to enrich your studies? 
A PhD student can apply to become a Visiting Research Fellow at the faculty – staying at either campus Levanger, Nesna or Bodø.
As a Visiting Research Fellow, you will have a contact person for practical matters and a desk at the faculty. The research period can range from 1 month to 12 months. 

Language requirement

All Visiting Research Fellows are expected to meet the university's standard English language requirements. If you are submitting an IELTS test to document your English language proficiency, the current minimum score requirement is 6.5. 

If you grew up in an English-speaking country, you will not be required to provide proof of English proficiency , but you must you meet the educational requirements specified in the country list provided by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).


Once approved, the Visiting Research Fellow will be issued with an agreement. This must be signed by the visiting student, their home institution and the Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Education and Arts.
Visiting students who are not EEA nationals, and are subject to immigration control, will need to be issued with the appropriate supporting documentation for the visa once the student visitor agreement has been signed and returned. If the intended visit is for six months or less, the student will require a short-term study visa.

How to apply

Please send:

  • A brief curriculum vitae (no more than three pages).
  • A cover letter stating why and for how long (provide dates) you wish to come to Nord University, including which campus. 
  • An outline of the research you propose to conduct while you are here.
  • A short description of how you are going to cover your expenses (accommodation and other living costs). 
  • A letter of recommendation from your university supervisor or head of department stating the reasons why it would be helpful for you to spend time at the Faculty of Education and Arts. 
  • A confirmation letter from your academic contact at the Faculty of Education and Arts, stating how your stay will enrich the academic environment of the faculty.

Note that the Faculty of Education and Arts does not have funds for Visiting Research Fellows. 

All applications will be judged strictly on academic merit.
