Generative artificial intelligence

Nord University wants students to familiarize themselves with the opportunities these tools provide and the implications for academic writing.

Effective use of tools requires each of us to make assessment and choices that ensure responsible and ethical use of generative artificial intelligence. To support this, the university has created guidelines.

Generative artificial intelligence is a form of artificial intelligence that automatically generates content based on language queries. Instead of merely collecting and presenting existing information, generative artificial intelligence produces new content in various forms, such as text, images, videos and music.

Nord University wants students to be practive in utilizing the opportunities that technology provides. While the opportunities are significant, balancing the use and misuse of generative artificial intelligence tools can be challenging in learning processes.

Guidelines:

  • Solutions based on

artificial intelligence often use what you write or upload to improve the service. This means that what you enter is stored and can be used further. An example of this could be that you enter all or part of an assignment into a chatbot, so you must take into account that the content is stored and can be spread.

Unlike many other GPT solutions, Copilot will not store queries or uploaded data. This makes the solution safer. The solution can be used for processing information classified as green (open) or yellow (protected).

More information about classification can be found at:

  • The storage guide explains, among other things, the requirements for storage areas and equipment to be used for "yellow", "red", and "black" data.

  • Copilot is available through the university's Office 365 package, which is accessible to all students.

If you use the Microsoft Edge browser, you can find Copilot by opening any website and clicking on the icon located at the very top of the right sidebar (shortcut keys: CTRL + Shift + .).

You must be logged in with your Nord account to access the full version.

  • Here are the key security benefits of using Microsoft 365 Copilot:

    • Threat Protection - Copilot uses advanced technology to detect and stop security threats before they can harm your system.
    • Encryption – All information processed by Copilot is encrypted. This means your data is protected and accessible only to you.
    • Privacy – Copilot continuously monitors your system to ensure there are no security issues.
    • Continuous Monitoring – Copilot keeps watch over your system at all times to maintain security.
    • Regulatory Compliance – Copilot adheres to all relevant data security laws and regulations, giving you confidence that your data is handled properly.
    • Usage Limitation – Note: Copilot is approved for handling up to yellow classified data according to Nord's classification guide. Copilot must not be used to process personal data.

About the guidelines

The guidelines are effective from 01.02.2025.

Approved Tools

Nord University has chosen to use Microsoft Copilot. Copilot can communicate in multiple languages and adapt to various academic fields and contexts.

As part of the Microsoft package at Nord University, all emplyees and students have access to Copilot.

Copilot is a GPT solution (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) that can generate text based on various tasks and inputs.

On Microsoft’s own information page about the solution, you can find more information about how your data is protected.

Unlike many other GPT solutions, Copilot will not store queries or uploaded data. This makes the solution safer. The solution can be used for processing information classified as green (open) or yellow (protected).
