About me

Trine Karlsen, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Professor in Health Sciences and an exercise physiologist with experiences ranging from altitude training, elite athletic performance, cardiovascular prevention, clinical studies and institutional leadership. 

My current research focus is in exercise and cardiovascular disease. 

My academic career started at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway in 2004 where I worked in different research positions until 2016. When leaving NTNU in 2016 to move to my home town Bodø I held a position as a Senior Research Scientist and Associate Professor at K.G. Jebsen Center for Exercise (CERG), NTNU. I served as the Dean of Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences at Nord University between 2017-2020. 

I have a M.Sc. from the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences (2000) and PhD from the Faculty of Medicine, NTNU (2008). 

I have completed two research fellowships at the UT Southwestern Medical Center and Institute of Exercise and Environmental Medicine, Dallas, Texas, USA (1999 and 2000), and as a visiting researcher at the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital and University of Queensland – School for Exercise Sciences (2014), and have 6 years' experience in elite athlete physiology and performance enhancement as a researcher and exercise physiologist for the Norwegian Olympic Committee and the Norwegian Ski Federation(2000-2006). 

I have coordinated the large European multicenter trial SMARTEX‐HF, and has been an elected member of The Exercise and Basic Science Nucleus in the European Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR), in the European Society of Cardiology (2012-2018). ​
