About me

David Valente is a PhD Research Fellow in English Language and Literature Subject Pedagogy at Nord University. He is also Coordinator of the Young Learners and Teenagers Special Interest Group for the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL YLTSIG) as well as Reviews Editor for the Children's Literature in English Language Education journal.

David has over 20 years’ experience in primary and secondary English education as a teacher and teacher educator. His specialist interests are using children’s literature, in-service teacher education and interculturality. He has previously worked with teachers and their learners in a range of contexts including Australia, Bahrain, Denmark, France, Japan, Mexico, Myanmar, Qatar, Syria, Thailand and the United Kingdom. 

His publications include a chapter on syllabus developments in primary English education, co-authored with Virginia Parker for The Routledge Handbook of Teaching English to Young Learners. He also recently co-authored a skills-based primary coursebook with Bridget Kelly, as part of the Fun Skills series published by Cambridge University Press.

Teaching

He teaches in the English section of the Masters in Education with a particular focus on subject pedagogy for grades 1-7.

Research

David's PhD research project focuses on exploring synergies between teacher education at the university level and classroom practice in grades 5-7 classrooms. Specifically, his research aims to illuminate the development of interculturality via children's literature in English education at the primary level.
