Professor Kjetil Jakobsen has written the introduction to the Norwegian edition of "Distinction", and will give us an introduction to Bourdieu as a social critic before the movie. What made Bourdieu’s thoughts so influential? And might there be some misunderstandings in the Norwegian Bourdieu-reception? Kjetil will untangle some of these questions, and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion after the movie.

The movie follows Bourdieu over three years in many different settings: holding lectures, supervising, speaking at rallies, in debate and in interviews with the press. Bourdieu has been of great influence in Norwegian sociology the last 30 years, especially within studies of inequality in education and economy, and studies of Norway as a class society. The movie paints a picture of the person behind the theories, and therefore maybe a better understanding of them as well. The movie also shows Bourdieu as a vocal critic of neoliberalism, and as such provides interesting insights into the connection between politics and research.

Pizza and soda will be served.
