The High North Center took part in two major events in Tromsø recently.

From January 24–26, we were represented at the Arctic Youth Conference, organized as part of Norway’s Arctic Council Chairship.

We hosted a stand, shared information about our projects, engaged with youth, and hosted a reception. We also attended sessions to better understand the issues young people care about.

Following this, we took part in Arctic Frontiers, one of the leading arenas for Arctic policy, research, and business. Throughout the week, staff members contributed to discussions on security, sustainability, and regional development.

Here are some highlights from the week:

👆As part of our engagement at the Arctic Youth Conference we attended sessions like this plenary on youth preparedness and resilience to gain insights.
👆Our YoungArctic project together with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists co-hosted a social gathering for conference participants on January 26th. This event created valuable networking opportunities.
👆The High North Center continued its engagement at Arctic Frontiers on Monday with the Bridging the Gap panel on connecting students and businesses in the High North. Organized by InnNord (High North Center, Nord University) and Nordland County, in cooperation with YoungArctic.
👆Wrapping up the first day of Arctic Frontiers, High North News Editor Arne O. Holm moderated the Arctic Geopolitics Pubinar, where experts discussed the shifting Arctic political landscape.
👆 On Tuesday morning, a successful meeting with India’s Arctic representatives led by Rear Admiral TVN Prasanna took place to discuss possibilities for cooperation.
👆Holm also joined a debate on Norway’s role in Europe on Tuesday and took part in the Arctic Security Seminar on Wednesday (photo), discussing geopolitical uncertainty in the region (moderated by Andreas Østhagen, affiliated with the High North Center).
👆On Wednesday, PhD candidate Maja Blomberg from Nord University, High North Center, presented her ongoing research on Northern Norway’s demographic challenges.
👆Professor Emeritus Frode Mellemvik, founder of the High North Center, moderated a session on Arctic-specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on the last day of Arctic Frontiers.
👆The discussion, which was live-streamed, explored how SDGs can better reflect Arctic conditions and Indigenous perspectives. The session was organized by High North Center, Nord University together with University of Saskatchewan.
