NORDOM – Research group for circumpolar history

The multidisciplinary research group for circumpolar history has expertise in historical trends of arctic regions from antiquity to modern times

Climate change, security, pursuit of natural resources and geopolitical tensions are currently drawing global attention to the circumpolar north. The geographical Arctic has a unique social, economic and environmental history which is key to understanding current events.

The multidisciplinary research group for circumpolar history has expertise in historical trends of arctic regions from antiquity to modern times. Its research covers a wide array of themes and scientific disciplines ranging from law, media and democracy, arts and humanities (including a wide variety of literary and cultural aspects that range from medieval legislation and trade to twentieth-century perceptions of the Sámi), peace and security, environment and natural resources to urban development. It builds on the Forum Research Seminar for History at Nord University, which has had steady activity for several decades. The group has extensive collaborations with universities and research institutes in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Members of the group come from regional naval and aeronautical museums.
