About the project

The project "Words and Violence" analyzes the democratic robustness and vulnerability of cultural life in the 1930s and 40s. This is done using statistical and qualitative approaches drawn from various disciplines, and by comparing Norwegian experiences with those of other countries occupied during World War II, especially France. The project analyzes the literary field before, during, and after World War II and examines why authors, intellectuals, and cultural workers made the choices they did, faced with censorship and terror, but also in the face of a new type of public investment in culture orchestrated by the fascist dictatorship. The goal is to produce solid knowledge about historical issues that continue to trigger major debates and are of great contemporary relevance, but which have been the subject of little systematic research.
