Clinical and Laboratory Procedures I

The course prepares students for their first internship period. It provides students with basic knowledge of hygiene and aseptic, the procedures for sampling, sample handling and analysis of various types of biological material, as well as knowledge of the most common instruments and equipment in clinics. The course teaches legislature regarding patient records, identity marking, passports and safety.

Knowledge The student:

  • Knows the procedures for safe sampling and safe handling of biological samples
  • Knows instruments and equipment used for sampling and analysis
  • Knows the most common clinical procedures
  • Knows Norwegian and international regulations for identification of animals, patient records, passports and safety
  • Has basic knowledge of different diagnostic imaging methods
  • Knows the relevant diagnostic institutions and laboratories

Skills

The student:

  • is capable of collecting, handling and preparing the most common samples taken from patients without contaminating or degrade the sample and without the risk of contaminating the environment
  • is capable of performing the basic analysis of urine samples
  • is capable of analyzing faces for the most common parasites
  • has basic knowledge of how to use the most common instruments used for diagnostic analysis or clinical procedures
  • understands the principles of dental care and is capable of performing basic dental care

General competence

The student:

  • understands and complies with the basic aseptic principles for sampling, sample handling and analysis
  • understand and comply with safety precautions of diagnostic imaging
  • is capable of planning and performing several clinical procedures according to professional standards
  • understands and complies with the principles of aseptic in general
  • can take part in discussions regarding problems and challenges concerning practical work

Cumpulsory: Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing

The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
