The master's thesis should primarily be empirical and be relevant to the objectives of the master's programme. Both quantitative and qualitative methods may be used. The master's thesis will normally be an individual work, although it is also possible for two or several students to cooperate. However, the thesis must be handed in individually. All master's students must write a thorough project description in cooperation with their main supervisor. The project description should include the theoretical and empirical background of the project, the problematics, method, data processing or method of analysis, ethical assessments, time frame and budget. The outline should contain relevant attachments and references and must be submitted by the end of the first semester for full-time students.
For registered students of Master in Biosciences.
Knowledge The student should:
- be able to acquire new knowledge in the field of terrestrial ecology and nature management, as well as knowing where to find literature within the field
- be able to acquire practical and theoretical knowledge related to sampling and analysis of terrestrial organisms and the environment in which they live
- have knowledge of various statistical methods used to handle biological data, and use these on their own data
- have knowledge within animal welfare and ethical treatment of animals if this is relevant to their thesis
Skills The student should:
- be able to acquire updated knowledge from electronic databases and scientific publications
- know the relevant scientific journals in biology, and terrestrial ecology and nature management in particular
- have acquired knowledge in selected analytical and statistical methods
- be able to write a scientific report
- have the ability to critically analyze their own and others' research work within their own thesis topic
General Competence Upon completion of the thesis the student should:
- have knowledge of relevant issues related to their own thesis
- be able to participate in the planning of new projects within their own area of research related to collecting information, planning experiments, analysis, statistical treatment of data
- have knowledge in processing, critical summary and dissemination of scientific information
- be able to communicate their research results both orally and in writing
- be able to exchange views and experience with others with a background in ecology and nature managemen research
No tuition fees except semester registration fee and course literature.
Mandatory part of the Master in biosciences, specialisation genomics.
The master's thesis is an individual scientific work, but you are entitled to guidance, individually or in groups. Further information about deadlines and forms are available in Canvas.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.
