Animation Fundamentals

CGA1002

In this introductory course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of animation using a 3D software. 

Classic animation exercises like a bouncing ball to more advanced exercises involving more than one moving object will be covered. 

The course focuses on the animation principles as well as foundational training in 3D animation. Based on this the students will plan and produce short animation tests using pre-rigged 3D models. 

Finally, the animations are presented as a rendered or captured sequence.

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Knowledge

  • Identify and make appropriate use of the 12 animation principles

Skills

  • Set and alter keyframes in a 3D Software
  • Reference in rigs and objects 
  • Utilize a graph editor 
  • Utilize a dope-sheet to adjust timing or offset animation.
  • Manipulate curves to alter animation.
  • Record and utilize video reference.
  • Output a captured sequence from a 3D software.

General Competence

  • Plan an animated sequence or scene.

Mandatory
Lectures, Lab work on assignments
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
