The subject provides an introduction to ethological basic concepts, the domestication and history of dogs, cats, and rabbits, as well as the natural behavior and needs of these species. The subject also offers a basic introduction to the biology and care requirements of pet rodents, as well as Norwegian legislation regarding animal husbandry and animal welfare.
The subject provides an introduction to ethological basic concepts, the domestication and history of dogs, cats, and rabbits, as well as the natural behavior and needs of these species. It also offers a basic introduction to the biology and needs of pet rodents. There is a theoretical and practical review of safe patient handling in various situations. Ethics and animal welfare concerning the care, breeding, handling, and medical treatment of pets are also important topics in the subject.

Knowledge: The student
- Is familiar with the natural needs and behavior of various animal species.
- Can explain the importance of ensuring good animal welfare in animal husbandry and is knowledgeable about stereotypical behavior.
- Can explain the challenges that domestication poses for different animal species.
- Possesses knowledge about the care and handling of healthy animals.
- Has knowledge of Norwegian legislation regarding animal husbandry and animal welfare.
Skills: The student
- Can recognize signs of stress in patients.
- Can use techniques and methods to handle animals in various situations while ensuring the welfare and safety of the animal, the owner, and the staff.
- Can prepare for hospitalization of patients in a clinic
General competence: The student
- Can interpret the behavior of animals in various situations and consider necessary measures.
- Can communicate about the subject with other professionals.
- Can reflect on ethical and animal welfare challenges related to breeding and the care of pets, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good animal welfare and proposing measures to address welfare challenges.
Semester fee and textbooks. Students must cover the cost of clinic attire and, if necessary, a laboratory coat. In addition to the semester fee and textbooks, it is expected that the student has access to a laptop computer.

The student needs to be present at campus to take part in teaching activities.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

- Mandatory participation - 100% attendance at seminars and guest lectures, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale: Approved/ Not approved.
- Mandatory participation - 100% attendance at practical exercises, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale: Approved/ Not approved.
- Written exam, 3 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale: Letter grades (A - F).
