Experience of Art, Architecture and Cultural Heritage

ENT105L
This course offers experienced-based learning activities such as excursions and fieldtrips in Bodø and the Helgeland archipelago and coastal district. Learn about the art, architecture and cultural heritage in the county of Nordland!
Students participate in experienced-based learning activities such as excursions and fieldtrips in Bodø and the Helgeland archipelago and coastal district. The aim is to get acquainted with the art, architecture and cultural heritage in the county of Nordland through the student's own active participation and subject development. Each student develops a reflection journal, documenting their experiences and reflections connected to the field trips, excursions and curriculum. And, each student reflects on the adventure experiences based on his/her own cultural and academic viewpoint through a final essay discussing this experience in relation to their own cultural background.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification and English language proficiency.

Places on the course are limited.

If the number of international applicants exceeds the number of places available, students from institutions holding a student exchange agreement with Nord University will be prioritized

Acceptance to the program Adventure Knowledge. The course is also offered as a single subject for international students at campus Bodø. 

Knowledge: The students will on successful completion of the course: Be able to recognise and describe central examples of architectural elements Be able to describe characteristics of building and institutional types Be able to describe sites of cultural heritage Be able to reflect on the role of cultural heritage and public space in society Be able to reflect on the challenges of mediating modern and contemporary art inside and outside the institutional setting

Gain consciousness of how experience of culture can reach a higher level through art Be able to describe how art and architecture may impact on national, regional and individual issues of identity Be able to reflect on the role of art, architecture and cultural heritage today Be aware of how geographical, geographical and environmental conditions affect the historical and contemporary development of culture

Skills Students should, after successful completion of module 3, be able to:

Arrange experience-based learning-activities in relation to art, architecture and cultural heritage sites Critically address and reflect on the challenges related to the mediation of art, architecture and cultural heritage Identify different institutional types and discuss their role in the mediation of art and culture Identify comparative issues relating to contemporary architecture and historical examples of architecture, in relation to the experience of the individual

Use experience-based learning as a tool to gain deeper understanding of culture

General competence On successful completion of the modules the students should have competence in or about: Learning through participating in hands-on activities (all modules) Developing learning activities connected with art, architecture and cultural heritage

Elective.

The course focuses on active learning methods. Learning through fieldwork is therefore a central teaching method. The field trips are compulsory. These activities will be followed up by lectures to refine the experience gained, and also by in-class discussions. Reflections of the activities are enhanced through the individual student¿s journal and essay writing. This learning-process is supplemented by field notes from the excursions and field trips from the other course modules.

The students participate in the following field trips: An excursion to central institutions and buildings in Bodø: o Contemporary art galleries and cultural heritage sites, central architectural sites in Bodø, and the new site for The House of Culture in Bodø.

A field trip from Bodø to the Helgeland Archipelago and Coastal District o Museums, churches, and cultural heritage sites on the mainland and the islands.

The programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluations (mid-term and final evaluations). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.
