Small Ruminants
The course provides an introduction to the production cycle in sheep and goat herds. The course emphasizes nutrition, health and breeding work on small cattle. Biological and economic factors in sheep and goat production are linked through the interpretation of prints from livestock inspections. Societal challenges are highlighted through discussion, and in meetings with organizations linked to the industries.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- have knowledge of the biological conditions that are the basis for proper and good keeping of small cattle
- has knowledge of and can assess key production-related target figures in the sheep and goat industry
- has knowledge of the Norwegian breeding programs for small cattle
- has basic knowledge of feeding and nutrition of sheep and goats
- have knowledge of what social challenges the industry is challenged with
- has knowledge of research and development work on sheep and goats
Skills:
- can assess feeding strategies for sheep and goats respectively
- can interpret and analyze operational results in small livestock production
- can find, assess and refer to information and subject matter, and present this in such a way that it illuminates a problem.
General competence:
- has knowledge of ethical issues related to the industry
- can exchange views on what is good production and operation in herds with sheep and goats
- can exchange views on which forms of operation provide good animal welfare for sheep and goats, and discuss the productions from a societal perspective
- can convey basic theory about correct feeding of sheep and goats, breeding theory in general, and the Norwegian breeding programs for sheep and goats in particular
Compound assessment. Both assessment tasks must be passed prior to the written examination.
- Assessment Task 1 - written submission of small fairy. Approved/ Not approved.
- Written examination, 3 hours, comprises 100% of the grade, grading scale A-F.
Pen, ruler, up to 2 bilingual dictionaries and calculator.
Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
