Building Design
The course deals with planning of buildings for livestock production, focusing on the keeping of cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and horses. This includes:
- material and construction choices in buildings for livestock
- choice of mechanization
- building layouts and space requirements
- outdoor installations
- building costs
- construction management
- drawing technique
A central part of the course is a project assignment where students apply acquired knowledge and skills to plan and present a building for livestock production.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
- has knowledge of building materials, construction techniques, constructions and construction regulations for livestock buildings
- has thorough knowledge of area requirements for animals, equipment for indoor mechanizing of livestock buildings and requirements for storage facilities.
- has knowledge of the work environment and risk factors in and around livestock facilities
- has knowledge of key research and development work in the subject area
Skills:
- can apply drawing techniques from hand-sketching to 3D-drawing using DAC (Data-Assisted Construction)
- has knowledge of various construction principles and mechanization for livestock buildings and is able to discuss the selecting of livestock building solutions
- can create situation plans in which the building is adjusted to the terrain and other buildings
General competence:
- can design buildings for keeping livestock and present alternative plans in the form of drawings, descriptions and calculations
- has the expertise to compose building solutions within a financial framework in accordance with regulations and recommendations
Compound assessment, letter grades
- Work requirement 1 - Approved at least 75% of defined mandatory activities, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale approved/ not approved. Must be passed prior to submission of the written assignment.
- Work requirement 2 - After further description, a preliminary project that forms the basis for the project assignment in the subject, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale approved/ not approved. Must be passed prior to submission of the written assignment.
- Written assignment, comprises 100/100 of the grade, letter grades.
