Academic Writing and Methodology

MET1005
Academic Writing and Methodology provides a basic introduction to scientific methodology within nature science.
The purpose of the course is to give the students an introduction to scientific methods, the requirements of a bachelor thesis, critical use of literature, and quantitative data collection, analysis and presentation.

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

Bachelor in Aquaculture Management

Bachelor in Nature Management

Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing

Bachelor in Livestock Science

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • can describe the scientific methodology from the research question and hypothesis to reporting
  • can explain central methods with regards to present ethical challenges within scientific studies
  • can give examples of where to find scientific literature and what the difference is between scientific literature and literature from other sources
  • can list the most commonly used statistical methods for data analysis, and identify for which type of data these are useful

Skills

  • can find, critically examine, summarize and disseminate relevant information in regards to chosen research question
  • can compose clear and concise research questions and hypotheses
  • can perform basic data analysis using the correct methodology
  • can evaluate own and others scientific approach and production within their own research area

General competence

  • can plan a research project that prolongs over time
  • can describe, conclude upon and summarize results from different data analyses
  • can disseminate theme specific information using relevant agencies
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
8 lectures á 2 hours. 5 seminars á 2 hours
Evaluation using mid-term and semesterly surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the national quality surveys.

Mandatory work in order to take the exam: Delivery of up to 8 reports; 6 of these (75%) must be approved.

Take-home examination (mini-review) - 3 days

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
