International Nature Management

NAF2003
The module is an introduction to international treaties affecting management of Norwegian biodiversity and how different countries face different challenges in nature management and conservation.

Core subjects are:

  • international treaties for conservation of species and nature types
  • biological, political and geographic factors leading to differences between countries' practice of nature management
  • property rights of biological data
  • indigenous perspectives on natural management and historical conflicts between indigenous and majority populations, exemplified with reindeer herding

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Nature Management, Bachelor's Programme

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

After completing the course, the student must have obtained:

Knowledge:

  • know international treaties for trade with species and genetic material
  • know international treaties for biodiversity conservation
  • know examples of border conflicts affecting wildlife
  • can understand factors shaping species distribution
  • can account for the challenges faced by sami reindeer herders from the majority community and from nature

Skills:

  • can assess the legality of imports and exports of biological products
  • can assess ecological condition of management units in the European water framework directive

General competence:

  • can locate relevant regulations for international nature management
  • can understand differences between management regimes and factors affecting them
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal. Students must pay their own transportation costs related to field excursions.
Elective course
Lectures and two excursions.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Students are assessed through a mandatory written assignment (passed/failed)

Home exam (A-F) 100/100

All aids permitted.
