Course content

The 2nd academic year of Educational Theory and Practice (PPU) includes 20 days of supervised, assessed and varied supervised professional training at upper secondary schools where the content will be related to pedagogy and subject didactics so that students develop their professional knowledge through both theory and experience-based reflection. Supervised professional training during the 2nd academic year shall include a total of 4 weeks of allocated time for preparations and follow-up work, meetings, assessment work, colleague collaboration and teaching etc. amounting to approximately 29 hours per week at the school providing supervised professional training. However, supervised professional training must be able to accommodate different needs and be able to allow for flexibility in respect of its implementation. During the final semester, students shall have a period of continuous supervised professionaltraining which places particular focus on independent teaching responsibilities.

Course learning outcomes

After completing the programme, students should have acquired the following knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge:

•possess knowledge about schools as organisations and social institutions

•possess knowledge about how local working life, culture and social life can be utilised during teaching

•possess knowledge about different ways development work can be carried out in schools

•possess knowledge about entrepreneurial learning processes, innovation and creativity relating to vocational education and training

Skills:

•be able to assess learning processes in various learning communities

•be able to independently and with others plan, implement and critically evaluate their own teaching

•be able to use and reflect on varied and vocationally relevant working methods and teaching materials

•be able to use and refer to relevant research findings in order to make informed choices and implement systematic didactic and pedagogical development work in a systematic manner

•be able to plan and evaluate meetings and development chats with pupils and guardians

General competence:

•be able to evaluate their own supervised professional training and that of others with reference to theory and research and contribute to the development of vocational pedagogy in schools

•possess insight into their own development as teachers and be able to analyse their own teaching competence and needs for competence enhancement

•be able to analyse their adaptation and development competence in order to meet the future needs of schools, employers and social life

It is expected that some expenses will be incurred in connection with travelling to and from the place offering supervised professional training. Nord University provides grants for travel expenses in accordance with current regulations.

Learning activities and teaching methods

The student's task is to be an active and interested participant during supervised professional training and to take responsibility during supervision.

Attention should be paid to the role of teachers in school communities, in schools as workplaces and on becoming acquainted with schools in their capacity as organisations.

Course evaluation

The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system

Supervised professional training

Supervised professional training shall be supervised and assessed and last for 20 days. Supervised professional training will take place at an upper secondary school.

Students employed by a school must have a minimum of 50% of their practical training at a school other than their own workplace.

Description of the course examination

The course has two written coursework requirements (AK) that are assessed as being approved/not approved. One log containing details about attendance at supervised professional training and one reflection note written on the basis of a given assignment text. All coursework must be approved to receive a final subject grade.

Supervised professional training (PR) is assessed by the supervisor in a practical training assessment as a pass/fail based on the student’s implementation abilities, participation, suitability and effort.
