Social Work in the Arctic

SOS1008
The course may add to the bachelor degree in social work, or other social science programs. It may also be an after og further education for social workers or others with interest for its topic.
The course introduces students to knowledge on challenges to social work in the Arctic. It gives students knowledge on social work together with indigenous peoples. It also give knowledge on social effects of climate change, and developments in urbanization and rural societies in the Arctic. The course gives knowledge on different social work responses to the social problems that follow these developments.

This micro credential course on 3 ECTS is a part of a network collaboration within University of the Arctic. The course is financed by funds from the Norwegian grant to the University of the Arctic. The course has the possibility to take on a maximum of 20 students.

The documentation requirement for Norwegian students:

  • Dokumentasjon av generell studiekompetanse, eller realkompetanse

The documentation requirement for students from the 10 network institutions within the University of the Arctic is:

  • Identification paper
  • Documentation of Admission and an active student status at one of the 10 universities in the network.
  • The documentation submitted must be in English.

The course may also be of interest to professionals in social work in the Arctic - the documentation requirement for applicants that are not students in the network is:

  • Higher education entrance qualification (Generell studiekompetanse=GSU). The general basis for admission to universities and university colleges in Norway is called Higher Education Entrance Qualification.
  • For applicants with foreign education, the requirements are specified in the GSU-list. Information about the documentations requirements for GSU in your country.
  • The documentation submitted must be in English.

The network within this project in The University of the Artic consists of the following 10 institutions:

Knowledge:

  • The students has basic knowledge on what has effects on the living conditions for indigenous peoples in Arctic.
  • Social work - how to do it in respect of the values of those affected
  • Broad knowledge on what challenges the climate changes pose on those affected that make social work necessary
  • Basic knowledge social work and community work under such conditions
  • Basic knowledge on urbanization, rurality and social work challenges.

Skills

  • The student can see the connection between different knowledges that forms the challenges for social work by indigenous peoples
  • The students are able to identify needs following from climate changes that challenges social work.
  • The student understand the connections between different variables that forms social work rural and urban societies

General competence

  • The student has insight in interplay and possibilities that exists between vulnerability, challenges and forces.
  • The student is able to present points of view with others on the interplay between theoretical perspectives and how to apply them in social work practice, both on individual, group and community level.
  • The student can reflect on different approaches to the topics, like gender, cultural, ethical approach and power.

In addition to the semester fee and costs for purchasing course literature, the students are expected to have a laptop.

Students with citizenship outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland must pay tuition fees to study in Norway.

The course includes lectures, seminars and groupwork. All teaching activities are digital.

Teaching will be given on 10., 17., 24. and 31. October at 18.00-20.30 each day.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Individual paper, Grading: Accepted/not accepted
When submitting an Assignment (OP), all aids are generally allowed. However, it is not permitted to cooperate by individual submission.
