One year programme in Bodø

English One Year Programme is a disciplinary study for those who plan to study for a Bachelor of English. The one-year programme may also be used as part of some other bachelor degrees. The programme focuses on relevant linguistic and literary topics, and aims to educate students within these fields and to prepare students for continuing their studies in this discipline. The programme consists of four courses of 15 ECTS credits each. The courses are English Language American Studies, Research and Writing and British Studies.

Admission requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification, acceptance into the English one year programme or other programmes at Nord University, and/or international / exchange student status at Nord University.

It is recommended to have English as a specialization subject in upper secondary school. Students are advised to acquire and familiarize themselves with the course literature at the start of the term.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Students shall:

  • have foundational knowledge of the sound structures, word patterns, and grammatical structure of the English language as well as insight into the cultural conventions for its use
  • have knowledge of English as a world language and its developing role as a contact language for people from different countries and cultures, as well as its importance in internationalization in education and the workplace
  • have knowledge of and can distinguish between literary genres, as well as conventions of academic writing, including responsible use of secondary sources and research ethics
  • have knowledge and understanding of English in a holistic, cultural context
  • have insight into the possibilities for the subject's role in developing interpersonal communication, values, respect, and tolerance
  • have knowledge of strategies for textual, linguistic, cultural, and analytical approaches to literature and other texts
  • have knowledge of modern literary theory
  • have knowledge leading to personal and academic maturation
  • have increased knowledge and understanding of language as a phenomenon

Skills

Students

  • have the ability and expertise to further their professional development in English within our present academic structure
  • can analyze and write research-based articles on literary texts, and also apply precise and customized concepts in working with texts
  • can explore society, history, and expressions of English-speaking countries
  • can use both oral and written English functionally and confidently

Job opportunities

The package can be incorporated into full degree Bachelor programmes. It also facilitates professional language and communication development for professionals working across a range of fields in both the public and private sectors, including communication, tourism, culture, education and social work.

Further education

Completion of the English one year programme qualifies for continued education in Bachelor of English at Nord University and for continued academic study at other programs or universities.

Semester registration 

Welcome to one year programme in English at Faculty of education and arts.
  
We have planned an autumn semester that will be exciting and inclusive for all our students.    
  
Registration  
All students at Nord University must register in Studentweb at the start of the semester. You can pay the semester fee and register as a student as soon as you receive your student number. After you have completed payment and registration, you must register for teaching and examinations. You will also be able to access important learning tools and online meeting rooms at Nord University. The deadline for payment and registration is September 1st.

Informal meet and greet with grilled food at “Gryta” (back yard next to the main cantina. Free buses arranged from Flatvold student housing at 4:30 p.m., with return at 7 p.m.

Monday 15th of August

International day – meet and greet for international students

Tuesday 16th of August​ 

09:30 a.m – 10:50 a.m: Meet and greet. Opportunity to meet students from your study program, and go together to the official opening. Attendance: Pennalet (area outside auditorium A12 Elsa Laula Renberg).​

11:00 a.m Commencement of the academic year, Nord University. Attendance at the main entrance.

Social activities
Buddies and Studentinord (the student welfare organization) are eager to make your first week at Nord University a positive and inspiring experience. They have planned a lot of social activities and we recommend that you download the app called «Infoskjermen Go» where you will find the information you need to attend the social activities. 

The first social activity is the traditional Pre-study barbecue by Studentinord on Sunday 14th of August, at 05.00 p.m, in the back yard, next to the main canteen​
