Admission requirements

3-year health and social education at the higher level and at least 1 year of relevant professional experience after completing education. Applicants with a different 3-year college or university education may be accepted for admission by special assessment of eligibility.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
The candidate:

  • has in-depth knowledge of various perspectives on mental health disorders
  • is able to apply knowledge of approaches in mental health work including substance and dependency issues
  • is able to analyse professional issues related to mental health work based on the discipline’s scientific traditions, distinctiveness and place of society

Skills

The candidate:

  • is able to use relevant knowledge and experience in order to establish, develop and maintain relationships with people with mental illness and substance dependency issues.
  • is able to use the resources of their own field of specialization in collaboration with users, relatives and other partners in mental health work
  • is able to analyse relevant professional and research-related ethical issues and document and ensure quality in the performance of mental health work

General competence

The candidate:

  • is able to apply knowledge and skills innovatively to develop service provision and conduct projects in mental health work.
  • is able to convey a comprehensive written project and master the specialized terminology in mental health work, ethics and methodology.
  • is able to contribute to inovative thinking and innovation processes in the field of mental health work

Job opportunities

Continuing education in mental health work qualifies for specialist positions in mental health work in the municipality, specialist health services and various private and life stance organizations (Church City Mission, Blue Cross, Red Cross and others).

Further education

Candidates who have completed continuing education in mental health work qualify to have 60 credits applied toward the Master’s Degree in Health Sciences at Nord University.

Study abroad

Students will be able to take advantage of the university’s general exchange options, for example through established mobility programmes such as Erasmus+ and Nordplus.
