Programme description

This semester package offers a wide introduction to Norwegian history from the medieval to the modern period and is recommended for history students who want to use their semester at Nord University to expand their knowledge about the history of their host country. It is also recommended to students who study sociology, cultural studies, political science, or literature, as there will be many theoretical overlaps that can be interesting for students from these disciplines as well. We also recommend the package to students from MINT disciplines to widen their intellectual horizon while staying at Nord University during an exchange semester. The course instructions and readings will all be in English.

Exchange students are admitted on the basis of nomination by their home institution. The student must first apply to their home university to participate. The home institution will provide the student with information about the admission requirements.

Language requirements

The language requirements do not apply to students with English as their first language.

Courses are carried out in English and we expect you to have sufficient fluency in English in order to cope with your courses from the start.

Level B2 required

You are required to have a minimum of level B2 for all courses offered to exchange students.

Level B2 is equivalent to IELTS minimum score: 5.0 or TOEFL minimum score: 60.

How to document your English proficiency

We consider your nomination by your home university as confirmation of your English proficiency at level B2.

The semester package can generally be acknowledged as one semester of undergraduate education at universities, related to study programmes within history, or as electives for other undergraduate degrees within social sciences.

Knowledge:

  • Understand the key events, figures, and periods in Norwegian history from the Viking period to the modern era.
  • Comprehend the theoretical frameworks and methodologies used in historical analysis and their application to the history of Norway.
  • Recognise the impact of international influences on Norwegian history and how Norway has interacted peacefully and violently with other countries throughout different periods.
  • Appreciate the role of sustainability in historical contexts, particularly how historical events and decisions have shaped Norway's approach to environmental and social sustainability.

Skills:

  • Analyse historical texts and sources critically, identifying biases and constructing well-supported historical arguments.
  • Communicate historical knowledge into Norwegian history effectively in both written and oral forms.
  • Apply historical knowledge of Norwegian history to contemporary issues, drawing parallels between past and present to inform current debates and policies.
  • Collaborate with peers from various disciplines and cultural backgrounds, enhancing international perspectives and fostering a global understanding of history.

General Competence

  • Utilise historical knowledge and analytical skills independently in various professional and academic contexts.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the ethical considerations in historical research and the responsible use of historical knowledge, with examples from Norwegian history.

  • Contribute to discussions on sustainability by integrating historical insights from Norwegian history into contemporary sustainability challenges.

The students are expected to pay for the syllabus literature and to possess a laptop.

Exchange students are exempt from paying semester and tuition fees.

Citizens of the EU/EEA/EFTA are exempt from tuition fees.
