Mine interesser er biologisk mangfold, biogeografi og økologi, spesielt i havet, med bruksområder i forhold til naturvern, klimaendringer, invasive arter og havbruk.

Jeg er fra Kildare i Irland. Jeg studerte i Galway (BSc Hon. Zoology NUIG) og Cork (PhD UCC), etterfulgt av postdocs ved Marine Biological Association Plymouth, og sammen med Marine Laboratory Aberdeen og Napier University Edinburgh (hvor jeg var basert på Poolewe, et avsidesliggende felt stasjon på vestkysten).

Etter å ha vært foreleser i Trinity College Dublin i 6 år, startet min gruppe et forsknings- og konsulentselskap kalt EcoServe (Ecological Consultancy Services Ltd) hvor jeg var administrerende direktør. Jeg var administrerende direktør for Huntsman Marine Science Center i St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada i nesten 4 år, og ble deretter professor ved University of Auckland, New Zealand until jeg begynte på Nord universitet i 2020.

Jeg underviser om temaer relatert til beskyttede havområder, marint biologisk mangfold, biogeografi og informatikk i biologisk mangfold.
