Smart ledelse for bærekraftig by- og samfunnsutvikling
There is a growing use of smart initiatives in organizations, cities and communities under sustainability agenda. The smart initiatives suggest technological development and digitalization of organizational activities for the improvement of services, products and sustainability of urban structures and communities. This, in turn, demands advanced knowledge, competencies and skills in assessing, balancing, managing and governing divergent dimensions of Smart initiatives.
The course is structured in two parts. Firstly, theories of smart management will be viewed from perspectives of digitalization, governance and organizational science. This part will cover different management tools used with the introduction of smart initiatives, with a particular focus on smart cities and communities. Secondly, the course will cover the existing experience of smart initiatives and related practices of smart societies This part will include case studies from different countries, guest lecturing by practitioners, therefore, illustrating the usefulness of smart management by application to specific contexts.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student:
Knowledge
- advanced knowledge of smart management from interdisciplinary perspectives, namely: digitalization, management and organizational science perspectives
- thorough knowledge of theoretical underpinnings related to smart management for sustainable cities and communities
- in-depth knowledge of various interpretations of smart management concept, its sustainability promises and development within cities and communities along with challenges on the way
Skills
- can analyse existing theories of smart management and work independently with practical and theoretical problem solving related to smart initiatives
- can analyse and critically examine the limitations and implications of technological initiatives in different organizations, cities and communities for sustainability
- can carry out academic work on smart management according to research ethical standards and in an independent way.
- can apply knowledge of practical implications of smart management in the different contexts and industries
General Competence
- can communicate and advocate solutions to the problems related to development of smart initiatives from a management perspective
- has ability to assess and discuss the tensions between theory and practice
- can apply their knowledge and skills to work and solve problems in groups
The course grade will be set on the basis of several different evaluations:
- Assessment task 1 - obligatory group report of the case work with grading pass /not pass
- Assessment task 2 - obligatory group presentation of the case work with grading pass /not pass.
- Individual home exam (4 hours) This will account for 100% of the grade with regular Norwegian grading system (A-F).
