Programme description

The Master of Practical Knowledge is an interdisciplinary programme aimed at students with vocational professional background. Using the vocational professional's own experiences as our starting point, we use resources from a variety of disciplines such as e.g. philosophy, psychology, political science, anthropology to investigate relevant issues for today's professionals. Issues discussed include practical knowledge and its development in praxis, the relationship between praxis and scientific research, the consequences of a globalised and highly technological world for today's vocational professional, complex situations in praxis and human relations.

Career opportunities

This programme provides the students with a solid foundation for extending their knowledge and competence development. It qualifies them for taking on professional development and research at their workplace, professional mentoring and management, assessment, facilitating good learning environments and developing interdisciplinary cooperation.
The program is netbased, part time in four years. The first two years follow a schedule with seminars in Bodø and online. The last two years are for the student research aiming at completion of the master thesis.  

Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Applicants must have successfully completed undergraduate degree from a university or a university college, i.e. a completed bachelor's degree/cand.mag. or the equivalent, with a grade average of C/2.7 or better. Candidates should also have at least 3 years of relevant, full-time work experience.

If the applicant does not fulfil the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfil the admission.

Students admitted onto the Master of Practical Knowledge programme may take one year of residency at the Master of Practical Knowledge at Södertörns Högskola in Stockholm, Sweden as a part of their programme.
Upon successful completion of this programme, candidates qualify for applying to doctoral studies (PhD) in Science of Professions at Nord University.

Upon successful completion of this master¿s programme, students shall have acquired the following learning outcomes as defined through knowledge, skills and general competences:

Knowledge

The students shall have

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant discussions in scientific theory and knowledge development
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant discussions in ethics related to their professional field of study
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant strategies and discussions in qualitative research method and field work
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant discussions about professions and society

Skills

The students shall be able to

  • Understand professional praxis in a perspective of scientific theory, i.e. a perspective in which key terms in the profession are reflected and created
  • Conduct field work in their own professional field
  • Critically reflect upon their own professional experience and praxis
  • Discuss his or her own professional praxis in a theoretical perspective
  • Critically reflect upon the experiences stemming from conducting research on his or her own professional praxis and their own profession
  • Discuss his or her own praxis research in from a methodological perspective
  • Express their own professional experience, in particular the experience from something being at stake in their own professional praxis

General competences

Students shall be able to:

  • Develop a theoretical understanding of professional praxis and profession, based on their own experience, in dialogue with relevant theoretical perspectives on experience, praxis and profession
  • Discuss the methodological challenges attached to praxis research and the developing of practical knowledge based on their own experience as a researcher in their own vocational field
