Growing up and being on the outside

The research group is concerned with studying both which mechanisms increase the risk of alienation, what characterizes children and young people's own experiences with alienation, and what consequences alienation has for the individual child and youth, and for society.

The term outsiders describes a situation where individuals or groups of people stand outside what are considered central social arenas, for example where they do not participate in work life or take education, or where they lack linguistic or cultural connection to the rest of society. External research can be temporary or more permanent. Many claim that we in Norway are experiencing an increase in alienation among young adults and youth. According to the OECD, the proportion of young people who go on health-related benefits is large in Norway compared to other countries (OECD, 2021), and the proportion has increased over time.

The research group for growing up and alienation is concerned with studying both which mechanisms increase the risk of alienation, what characterizes children and young people's own experiences with alienation, and what consequences alienation has for the individual child and youth, and for society. The research group is interdisciplinary, and includes various disciplines such as sociology, social work, anthropology and political science.

The research group plans monthly meetings where we discuss various theoretical contributions, present and discuss planned or ongoing research. The group also wants to be an arena for dialogue between research and various fields of practice.

Plans:

Since the research group is a new start, the future plans will naturally be formed as we get started. At the start-up meeting on March 7, 2023, we want to map out what wishes and expectations the members have, and incorporate these as far as possible in later plans. In terms of concrete plans, we are currently planning a book project about presence and absence in primary school, which several members of the group want to participate in. We also want to design a joint book project for the group, with the working title Oppvekst og öbernskap, where as many as possible of group members can contribute. Several of the group's members are also involved in the work on two NFR applications that will be worked on beyond autumn 2022, until the application deadline in February 2023.

The group also wants to be a meeting place between research and practice, both so that we can present and disseminate our own research and to get input for knowledge development from those who work with services for children and young people. In September, we would like to invite you to a one-day seminar in collaboration with Nordland county council on growing up and outsiders, where we invite services in the Bodø area to participate.
