The course is mandatory for students of Joint Bachelor Degree in Animal Science.

Knowledge The student:

  • Has knowledge of the microscopic structure of normal organs and systems of mammals
  • Has an overview of the different methods used for tissue preparation and examination
  • Is familiar with the key events in normal embryological development in mammals, birds and amphibians.

Skills The student:

  • Can use the light microscope to examine histological glass slides.
  • Can identify and describe, both orally and in writing, using proper academic terminology, the normal structure of the mammalian tissues that comprise the various organs.
  • Can find relevant published information and use it for the interpretation of mammalian tissue sections
  • Can understand and reflect upon the relation between the structure of mammalian tissues and their function.

General competence The student:

  • Can collaborate and exchange opinions with fellow students for the preparation of scientific reports.
  • Can communicate results and theories both orally and in writing.
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Compulsory: Joint Bachelor Degree in Animal Science
  • Lectures (46 hours)
  • Laboratory exercises (24 hours) with reports

Practical exercises: Study of tissue sections of various tissues and organs.

1. Final written exam (SK) (4 hours) with regular Norwegian grading system (AF). Counts for 60% of the final grade.

2. Six written assignments (OP), altogether they count for 40 % of the final grade. Letter grades A-F according to regular Norwegian grading system.

The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.

Compound assessment:

Students deliver six group reports (written assignments) throughout the semester. 5 count for 7% of the total grade and one (on embryology) for 5% of the total grade. Letter grades A-F according to regular Norwegian grading system.

At the end of the semester, there will be a written school exam, that counts for 60% of the grade. Letter grades A-F according to regular Norwegian grading system.
