Biophysical Interactions

BI312F
In recent years a lot of the marine research has been concentrated on how the physical forcing is shaping the marine environment. This course focuses on an integrated understanding of physical and biological processes, and will provide knowledge to handle new trends in the coupling between physical oceanography and marine ecology. The theoretical part of the course deals with the basis for the variability of marine production in time and space. The course also focus on practical training in presenting a scientific work orally and in producing a scientific paper.
Students enrolled in the Master in Biosciences - Marine Ecology specialization. If there is capacity, other students qualified for a Master in Biosciences may enroll.

On successful completion of the course:

Knowledge

The candidate will:

  • have advanced knowledge of the physical-biological coupling in marine ecology
  • have a thorough knowledge of the scientific methods used on physical and biological marine data

Skills

The candidate will:

  • be able to interpret, critically assess and use appropriate methods useful for understanding the physical-biological interrelationships in the ocean
  • be able to analyze the physical-biological links in the ocean
  • be able to use relevant forms of expression in oceanography and marine ecology

General Competence

The candidate will:

  • be able to analyze ethical issues involved with exploitation of the marine environment
  • be able to communicate about technical issues, analysis and conclusions in the field of marine ecosystems, both for specialists and the general public
  • be able to apply their knowledge and skills about biophysical interaction in new areas to carry out sophisticated tasks and projects
In addition to the semester fee and syllabus literature, students are expected to have a laptop with microphone and camera.
Specialization: Master in Biosciences
The course has multiple teaching approaches, e.g. lectures, seminars and project work.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment consisting of:

  • Portfolio: 10 pages in article form statistical analysis of time series. Counts 40%.
  • Oral: One presentation of a scientific paper. Counts 20%.
  • Oral examintion: Counts 40%

Grading system A-F.
