Diversity of Life I - Protists and plants
BIO1015
The course provides an overview of the biodiversity of plants, algae and microbes together with contemporary perspectives on their evolution and diversification. Central themes include the concept of species, evaluation of biodiversity and current topical issues including biodiversity loss under climate and environmental change.
Admission to the course follows the admission requirement in the bachelor program in biology.
Knowledge

- Has broad knowledge of the global biodiversity of organisms including algae, plants and microbes across terrestrial and marine environments.
- Is familiar with contemporary models and hypotheses of the evolution of cellular life.
- Understands species concepts and can explain how to quantify and evaluate biodiversity.
- Is aware of current issues including biodiversity loss through climate warming and human activity.

- Can find, evaluate and integrate scholarly information on biodiversity.
- Can apply established academic knowledge and modern research to practical and theoretical problems in biodiversity.

- Can formulate questions and communicate findings through scientific writing.
- Can update their own knowledge on biodiversity and key evolutionary concepts.
In addition to the semester fee and syllabus literature, students are expected to have a laptop with microphone and camera. Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in courses with laboratory exercises.
Compulsory: BSc in Biology
Campus based lectures, seminars and lab exercises.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
Compound assessment, grading scale Letter grades
- Portfolio, comprises 25/100 of the final grade, grading scale Letter grades.
- Written examination, 3 hours, comprises 75/100 of the final grade, grading scale Letter grades.
Pencil, pen, ruler, simple calculator and bilingual dictionaries.
Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
