Infectious Diseases

DYR1003
The course provides an introduction to various types of infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites), and diseases that these agents can cause. The main emphasis is on agents that are common in Norway, and which can cause illness in family animals or are transmitted to humans from animals (zoonoses). Furthermore, an introduction is given to how outbreaks of infectious diseases and the spread of infection can be prevented.

For students admitted to the Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing at Nord only.

Knowledge

  • Have basic knowledge of general microbiology and parasitology
  • Knowledge about the most important microbiological agents that occur in family animals in Norway and what diseases they can cause
  • Know the basic techniques for growing and identifying bacteria
  • Know the most common parasites in dogs and cats in Norway, their biology and life cycle and pathways, and the diseases they can cause
  • Know basic techniques for the detection and identification of parasites.
  • Know the concept of zoonosis, and have knowledge of the most relevant zoonoses in family animals
  • Have basic knowledge of infection spread, infection prevention and hygiene.
  • Have knowledge of immune prophylaxis in general and about common vaccine programs used in dogs and cats in Norway

Skills

  • Is able to identify possible zoonosis, and suggest measures to prevent infection.
  • Is able able to suggest and implement diagnostics of common parasite infections.
  • Is able to explain and reflect on different measures of infection prevention, such as vaccination programs and parasite treatment.
  • Is able to find, evaluate and refer to relevant information and literature within the field of infections and infection control.

General Competencies

  • Has acquired general knowledge about infectious diseases, infection prevention, regardless of agent and species.
  • Is able to communicate theories, issues and possible solutions orally and in writing, to other professionals and to pet owners.
No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply. The university require that students have a laptop.
Compulsory for Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing. 

The student needs to be present at campus.

Lecutures.

Laboratory work with reports.

Presentations and seminars.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment, grading scale Letter grades

  • Compulsory participation - laboratory exercises, seminars and practical exercises , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Assessment task - lab reports, submission of written assignments and presentation of written assignm, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Written examination, 5 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
