Veterinary Nursing I

DYR2002
The course prepares the student for the second placement period. It provides students with the basic training of clinical procedures, knowledge of procedures for sampling, sample handling and analysis of various types of biological material. The student get knowledge of basic veterinary nursing, the most common instruments and aids. The course also provides tools to help students in communicating with customers and colleagues.

For students admitted to the Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing at Nord only. 

Before entering the students need to pass:

Knowledge

The candidate

  • has knowledge about clinical parameters
  • has knowledge about the purpose, structure and application of nursing plans
  • has knowledge about safe handling of biological material
  • has knowledge about instruments used in sampling and handling
  • has knowledge about the most common clinical procedures in a small animal clinic
  • has knowledge about regulations for identification of animals and records
  • has knowledge about various imaging methods

Skills

The candidate

  • knows how to take, handle and prepare the most common samples in a safe way without contaminating or deteriorating the sample nor the environment.
  • knows the principles for using the most common instruments in sampling and diagnostics.
  • can understand and apply terminology in veterinary nursing
  • understands the principles of basic veterinary nursing
  • understands the principles of dental care

General Competencies

The candidate

  • knows and understands the significance of the normal variation in physiological parameters in different situations
  • understands the principles for recording, monitoring and assessing clinical parameters
  • understands and complies with basic aseptic principles in sampling, sample handling and analysis
  • can understand and abide to safe routines for imaging
  • can understand and abide by the principles of aseptics in general
  • is able to communicate with customers, colleagues and partners

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply. The university require that students have a laptop.

The students might have to buy coats for laboratory and clinical work. 

Compulsory for Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing. 
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Compound assessment, grading scale Letter grades

  • Compulsory participation - 100% attendance at laboratory exercises, practical exercises and seminars, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Portfolio - submission of lab reports , comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Passed / Not Passed.
  • Written examination, 5 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
