Literature and Film

ENG2023
In today’s multimodal world, the definition of "text" is rapidly advancing. Deepen your knowledge and appreciation of English-language literature and film by reading, viewing, and discussing a carefully curated selection of text/film pairings, led by English Department faculty.
The course "Literature and Film" engages students in a discussion of central works of English-language literature in conversation with cinematic adaptations. Film is a significant cultural expression of the literary sensibilities that form novelistic traditions in English. By developing a nuanced appreciation of cinematic language and technical craft, students can then appreciate more fully how literature and film work in tandem to create meaning that might not be as immediately present in either the literature or the film alone. The course literature has been carefully selected to represent a diverse representation of ideas, writers, and filmmakers, and enhances one’s understanding of the English language and its cultures.
Compulsory for students in Bachelor of English. The course is also offered as an elective outside of this programme.
