Laboratory Safety
The course will provide essential Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) training for new students who will be undertaking laboratory work during the study programme before joining in on the study programme’s laboratory courses. The purpose is to avoid accidents and personal injury.
The safety course consists of theoretical HSE training, a practical introductory course on laboratory work and a first aid course. The safety course contains both theoretical information about HSE and practical training in proper laboratory techniques and first aid.
Laboratory tasks can potentially be hazardous. Based on potential risks, the course follows Norwegian and European regulations such as:
- The Norwegian Working Environment Act

- The Norwegian Waste Regulations
- The Norwegian Fire and Explosion Prevention Act
- The Norwegian Chemical Labelling Regulations The Norwegian Declaration Regulation

- The Norwegian Regulations on concerning Excise Duties sales tax

Knowledge
The student
- is familiar with the risks that may occur when doing laboratory work, and be able to assess risks, measures and consequences
- is familiar with the procedures relating to what to do in the event of an accident/fire
Skills
The student
- is able to master the use of the chemical inventory and safety data sheets in order to obtain information on working safely in laboratories
- is able to comply with local working procedures and governmental provisions relating to safe work in laboratories
- is able to use laboratory equipment that is important for the pharmacy study programme
General competence
The student
- has insight into and an understanding of the purpose and consequences of violations of local and central governmental HSE provisions
In addition to the semester fees and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptops, web cameras and headphones.
Students must obtain their own laboratory coats, suitable shoes for the laboratory and a calculator approved for the study programme. Further details about clothing and footwear requirements will be provided during the course.
Theoretical course
Compulsory
Access to the course is only given to students admitted to the Bachelor's Programme in Pharmacy.
Teaching takes place on campus. Some teaching may be done online.
The following learning activities are used during teaching:
- Physical/online lectures
- Laboratory courses with guided tours of the laboratories
- First aid course
Course attendance is compulsory. Compulsory attendance is necessary to ensure that students achieve the learning outcomes described for the course (skills and general competence).
Compound assessement, grading scale Approved/ Not approved
All parts described below must be approved/passed in order to receive a final grade in the course.
- Assessment task, comprises 50/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
- Compulsory participation- 100%, comprises 25/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
- Compulsory participation- 100%, comprises 25/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
