Medicinal Chemistry
Knowledge
The student
- has broad knowledge of the general principles which apply to medicinal chemistry and specific knowledge of
medicinal chemistry relating to the most commonly used groups of pharmaceuticals
- has knowledge of how pharmaceuticals affect different target structures such as receptors, enzymes, ion channels and transport proteins
- has knowledge of how pharmaceuticals are metabolised in the body
- has in-depth knowledge of how the physiochemical properties of active ingredients affect solubility and absorption
- has knowledge of the structure, properties and application of selected pharmaceutically relevant natural substances
- has an overview of the basic techniques used in the development of pharmaceuticals
Skills
The student
- is able to identify the physiochemical properties of active ingredients on the basis of their structure
- is able to apply chemical principles in respect of a range of active ingredients, which is important for their effects and stability
General competence
The student
- is able to, on the basis of pharmaceutical information, to account for topics that relate directly to chemicals and is also able to participate actively in discussions about other topics where these might be related to the structure and chemical properties of the pharmaceutical substances
Theoretical course
Only students admitted to the Bachelor's Programme in Pharmacy are given the option to take this course. Compulsory
Teaching takes place on campus. Some teaching may be done online. The following learning activities are used during teaching: lectures and seminars. It is required that students themselves become actively involved in their learning process. Individual work accounts for a high percentage of the course workload.
