Pharmaceutics in Aquaculture

The aim of the course is for students to gain insight into the pharmaceutical aspects of aquaculture and fish farming. Course instruction is designed to highlight the characteristics of pharmaceutical practices in aquaculture, based on generic pharmaceutical tools.

The key subjects will be fish pharmacology and therapy. Students will also learn about the use of quality systems that are relevant to the production and use of aquaculture pharmaceuticals.

Emphasis will also be placed on the application of knowledge-based practices relating to the assessment of pharmaceutical issues relating to aquaculture.

The course is offered to international students. The teaching of these topics will take place in English if international students are present.

The course is reserved for students on the Bachelor's Programme in Pharmacy.
The student must have passed all courses in first, second and third semester in order to gain access to the course teaching.

Knowledge

The student

  • have knowledge of the biology of relevant farmed species, focusing in particular on animal welfare, physiology and pathology
  • have knowledge of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in farmed fish
  • have knowledge of the pharmacological principles that are relevant in aquaculture, including vaccine-induced immunity
  • have knowledge of principles relating to the development of vaccines for fish, and be able to account for the importance of vaccines in respect of fish health at individual and population levels
  • have knowledge of different pharmacokinetic calculation methods
  • have knowledge of the design and implementation of clinical trials
  • have knowledge of the legislation and regulations that govern the use of pharmaceuticals in aquaculture

Skills

The student

  • is able to undertake and use pharmacokinetic calculations in order to shed light on academic pharmaceutical issues
  • is able to apply professional knowledge and principles in respect of knowledge-based practices in order to assess possible solutions to pharmaceutical issues in aquaculture

General competence

The student

  • is able to critically assess academic information sources at different levels
  • is able to take part in the public debate on subjects relating to the use of pharmaceuticals and chemicals as part of sustainable aquaculture
  • is able to contribute pharmaceutical expertise in respect of interdisciplinary cooperation with the aquaculture industry
  • understand how quality systems contribute towards the safe use of pharmaceuticals and improved fish health in the aquaculture industry
  • understand how the rational use of pharmaceuticals can contribute towards sustainable aquaculture, good fish welfare and safe food production
  • is familiar with innovation processes in the aquaculture industry
  • is able to reflect on ethical issues relating to aquaculture at national and international level
  • is able to plan, implement and discuss the supervision and assessment of fellow students
In addition to the semester fees and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptops, web cameras and headphones.

Teaching will take place on campus in the form of lectures, seminars, group work and exercises. Interaction with the labour market will be included as part of the course.

Compulsory attendance is required to achieve the course learning outcomes.

Compound assessement, grading scale A - F. All parts described below must be approved/passed in order to receive a final grade in the course.

  • Assessment task, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Compulsory participation - 80%, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
  • Oral examination, 30 minutes, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale A - F.

The topic for the exam will be selected based on an assignment given during the course.

Students will evaluate each other's assignments during a mock conference.
