Fish Welfare

HAV2004
The course will provide an introduction to theoretical and practical fish welfare. It will provide an understanding of how to use operational welfare indicators in different farming procedures and systems. As part of the course, a welfare course is conducted by Labora AS, which provides a certificate of approved education as required by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority for all farming professionals.

Knowledge

The student

Has an understanding of the term animal welfare and what it includes

  • Explain the various welfare needs of salmon
  • Explain different group, individual and environment-based welfare indicators in salmon
  • Understand the importance of good fish welfare at individual, corporate and community level
  • Understand how different production systems and handling procedures affect fish welfare

Skills

The student

  • Identify the risk of compromised fish welfare during commercial production of salmonids and take measures to counteract this
  • Could implement specific and general measures to prevent compromised fishing welfare.
  • Help improve fish welfare at plant level

General competence

The student

  • Knows about the importance of good fish welfare in the aquaculture industry
  • Has competence about how fish welfare can be prevented and improved.
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature and laptop apply.In addition to the semester fee and syllabus literature, students are expected to have a laptop with microphone and camera. Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in courses with laboratory exercises. 
Compulsory.
Lectures.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys. 
Oral examination in February. Grades A - F.
