Animal Health

HUS1002
The course is an introduction to health and disease in domestic animals. Key topics include prevention of infection and prevention of disease, animal diseases that can spread to humans, and commonly encountered diseases in livestock.

An introduction to:

  • key issues and principles regarding health/disease and disease prevention in animals (cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, dog, cat, poultry)
  • relevant laws, regulations and agreements
  • food safety
  • zoonoses
  • key contagious animal diseases (cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, dog, cat, poultry). The emphasis is on diseases occuring in Norway, but some severe, contagious animal diseases occuring abroad are also included
  • animal diseases related to the production, feeding and environment of animals
The subject is reserved for the study programme Animal Welfare or Animal Sciences - Welfare and Production. Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.
Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to:

Knowledge:

  • thorough knowledge of key terms, assessments and issues related to animal health and disease in general
  • basic knowledge of the relationship between animal health and animal welfare, and the relationship between animal health and human Health
  • basic knowledge of key diseases that occur or may occur in the following species of domestic animals: Cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, dogs, cats and poultry
  • knowledge of key laws and regulations related to animal health
  • knowledge of key research areas in animal health

Skills:

  • can account for reasons why various animal diseases arise and occur
  • can conduct analyses and make simple investigations related to animal health and disease
  • can, based on knowledge an analytical skills, propose possible solutions to animal health problems

General competence:

  • knowledge and the ability to reflect upon and assess issues where animal health is a key component
  • able to propose preventive measures related to animal disease
  • knowledge and skills required to communicate about issues and potential solutions in the field in a clear and comprehensible way
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.

Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment, letter grades

  • Compulsory participation - excursion
  • Assessment task 1 - written submission
  • Compulsory coursework 2- multiple choice: 7 out of 8 must be approved

The compulsory participation and tasks comprises 0/100 of the grade, are evaluated with approved or not approved, and must be approved prior to submission of the written examination.

  • Written assignment, comprises 40/100 of the grade, letter grades.
  • Written examination, 90 minutes, comprises 60/100 of the grade, letter grades.

Written exam: Pen, ruler and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
