Climate and Sustainability

HUS1003
The goal of this course is to increase how knowledge about climate, environment and sustainability can be applied in agriculture and forestry, and look at how some of the environmental challenges can be solved.

The course encompasses the following main themes:

  • Greenhouse gases and how they affect the atmosphere
  • Biodiversity and biodiversity
  • Adaptation of agriculture, forestry and aquaculture to a changing climate
  • Calculation of emissions and emission goals for greenhouse gases.
  • Emission of greenhouse gases from agriculture, forestry and aquaculture
  • UNs Sustainable Development Goals
  • Challenges with climate and sustainability in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture

The subject is reserved for students of the follwoing study programmes:

  • Animal Welfare
  • Animal Sciences - Welfare and Production
  • Circular Bioeconomy.

Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor.

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to:

Knowledge:

  • has thorough knowledge of the impact climate change is having on agriculture and forestry and the adapations that can be done
  • has knowledge of greenhouse gasses and how they impact the atmosphere (behavior, production, sources and significance)
  • has thorough knowledge of how the United Nations Sustainable Development goals relate to agriculture, and emission reduction targets and strategies
  • has knowledge of the impacts agriculture has on biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • has knowledge of important research and development work in the field of climate and sustainability

Skills:

  • can apply new research and developments in the field in a practical manner to manage farms for environmental sustainability.
  • can understand and get into research about climate and sustainability for building own competance in these fields.

General competence:

  • have insights into the UNs sustainability development goals and how they can be of relevance to agriculture
  • can exchange views on how climate change is impacting agriculture and visa versa
  • can communicate professional literature that is of relevance to climate and sustainability in agriculture and contribute to professional discussions in the field
  • can actively participate in debates on important environmental issues in relation to the agricultural sector
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures and exercises.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment, grading scale letter grades

Written assignment - group, comprises 40/100 of the grade, letter grades.

Written assignment - individual, comprises 60/100 of the grade, letter grades.
