Forage Production and Feeds

HUS1004

The course encompasses the following main themes:

  • relevant feed means in Norwegian livestock production
  • soil as a cultivation medium, soil structure, nutrients and erosion
  • plant growths
  • meadland farming, pasture and other feed plants
  • grain growing
  • grass conservation
  • grains, grain trade and roughage raw materials
  • manufacturing and processing of roughage

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Animal Sciences - Welfare and Production, Bachelor’s Programme
  • Livestock Sciences, Bachelor’s Programme

Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor. 

Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:

Knowledge:

  • has knowledge of conditions characterizing Norwegian feedproduction and knowledge of the most relevant feed means in Norwegian livestock production. The course also provides knowledge of grooming and using pastures
  • has knowledge of soil and nutrients and about plant growths and growing plants, with an emphasis on growing pastures and other Norwegian feed plants, both in conventional and ecological farming
  • has knowledge of the optimal time to harvest and the most relevant conservation methods for roughage
  • has knowledge about the framework conditions for grain trading and roughage production

Skills:

  • can assess the consequences of different operating and conservation aspects for crops and the quality of homegrown feed and how this affects the need for roughage

General competence:

  • can combine professional knowledge with insight into relevant research and development work, as well as present and recommend alternative farming arrangements
  • can interpret analyses to argue for and suggest improvement of existing plans for growing, harvesting and conservation of roughage
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Compulsory
Lectures and excursions.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment, A-F

  • Assessment task - 2 assignments, worth 0/100 of the grade. Pass/Fail.
    • Must be completed and passed before proceeding to the written school examination.
  • Written school examination, 4 hours, worth 100/100 of the grade, A-F
