Small Ruminants and Poultry

This course will provide insights in small ruminant (sheep and goat) and poultry production (layers, broilers, and turkey). As a student on this course, you will learn about topics like housing and feeding, as well as breeding and health, for these species.

The course comprises of the following main topics:

  • Biological and economical factors in the production of small ruminants (sheep and goats) and poultry (broiler chicken, egg production, turkey)
  • Management and feeding of small ruminants and poultry
  • Breeding and breeding stock of small ruminants and poultry
  • Analyses of production data
  • Domestic and international organization of poultry production
  • The national importance of the production of small ruminants and poultry
  • Societal challenges

The subject is reserved for students of the following study programmes:

  • Animal Sciences - Welfare and Production, Bachelor’s Programme

Other students can get admitted if there are places available. Contact student advisor. 

Prerequisite knowledge in livestock environment, animal health, animal welfare, animal nutrition and forage production and feeds.

After completing the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • biological conditions that are fundamental for a financially and ethically responsible husbandry of small ruminants and poultry
  • basic knowledge of feeding and nutrition of small ruminants and poultry
  • central production targets and their importance for the economy of small ruminant and poultry production
  • the organization of breeding of small ruminants and poultry
  • research and development in the fields of small ruminants and poultry

Skills:

  • interpret and analyze production and operating profit in small ruminant and poultry production
  • gather and interpret information and subject material to answer a research question

General competence:

  • have insight into the national importance of the productions of small ruminants and poultry, and be able to discuss them from an ethical and societal point of view
  • can express points of view on what constitutes good animal welfare, production and management of small ruminants and poultry
  • can communicate central subject material through relevant means of expression
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Lectures, seminars, excursions, group assignments and written assignments. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning through active participation in the teaching activities.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment. Both assessment tasks must be passed prior to the written examination.

  • Assessment Task 1 - written submission of small fairy. Approved/ Not approved.
  • Assessment Task 2 - written submission of poultry. Approved/ Not approved.
  • Written examination, 5 hours, comprises 100% of the grade, grading scale A-F.

Pen, ruler, up to 2 bilingual dictionaries and calculator.

Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer is considered cheating.
