Precision Livestock Farming

This course provides an in-depth study of topics within ethology, animal welfare, housing and the environment for various species in livestock production.
This course provides an in-depth study of topics within ethology, animal welfare, housing and the environment for various species in livestock production. Furthermore, the course deals with how information from the herd and housing conditions can be used in optimizing the operation of the farm. The course also provides an introduction to data sources, sensors and digital aids, and how these can simplify the work and strengthen decision making in production.
Students must meet current admission requirements for the associated study program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student:

Knowledge:

  • has an advanced knowledge and understanding of animal welfare
  • has in-depth knowledge of ethology, welfare indicators, housing and the environment for livestock
  • has advanced knowledge of various technology solutions and data sources in livestock farming

Skills:

  • can analyze and critically apply various sources of information from professional sources and studies on issues that affect livestock welfare and production
  • can apply knowledge of ethology, welfare indicators, technology, housing and the environment to create opportunities to improve animal welfare and optimize production
  • can use relevant methods to carry out independent research and/or development work under supervision and in line with current research ethics norms

General competence:

  • can propose preventive measures to prevent animal welfare problems from occurring and to increase the welfare and quality of life of livestock
  • can convey extensive independent work and master forms of expression in animal science
  • can communicate academic issues, analyzes and conclusions in animal science, both with specialists and to the general public
  • can contribute to new solutions and innovations to improve animal welfare and production
In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his disposal.
Elective
Lectures, exercises, group work and student presentations.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.
