Basic Chemistry

KJ100F

Basic general/inorganic chemistry, basic organic chemistry, selected topics of basic biochemistry.

Course in laboratory safety (KJ105F) is needed to get access to the laboratory exercises of the course. The laboratory safety course is held in the beginning of the semester.

Knowledge
The student has knowledge of:

the properties of elements (including the periodic table), salts and molecules
the rules for naming of compounds in organic and inorganic chemistry
the most important reaction types in inorganic chemistry (mainly aqueous solutions) and organic chemistry
the most important biochemical substance classes

Skills
The student is able to:

calculate reaction yields, concentrations and pH (both strong and weak acids and bases, and mixtures of acids and bases including buffers)
perform simple laboratory work

General Competence
The student is able to understand that:

chemistry is a broad comprehensive study
chemistry is an important basis for understanding biological processes

Bachelor in Veterinary Nursing
Foundation Year

Lectures with theoretical exercises (in total 90 hours pr. semester).

Portfolio, that holds:

Laboratory exercises (4 three-hour lab exercises) and reports.
Theory excercises (passed/ not passed), three group excercises, five individual excercises.

Important! The student must be present at the mandatory safety course to get access to the mandatory lab. excercises.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Written school examination (pen and paper).
