Ethics in an Uncertain World

LED5011
The course illustrates how challenges related to environmentally and socially responsible activities can be addressed. Practicing responsible leadership and global citizenship are key skills for any employee in a business, organizations, and the public sector. To develop vibrant communities in a complex and uncertain world, it is of great importance to developing competence inspired by a multitude of perspectives, thoughts, and ideas. Accountability is updated through various ethical theories and practical examples. Global citizenship is problematized through a multidisciplinary approach where the interaction between economy, society, and nature is central. Dialogue is central to designing the visionary development processes towards viable business and regional development.

It is possible to apply for admission to the course as a single course. There are reservations about the available capacity on the course. The applicant must meet the current admission requirements for the Master of Science in Global Management program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student:

Knowledge

  • Has in-depth knowledge of key trends in development within organization and management towards integration, and social and ecological sustainability
  • Has in-depth insight into the main content of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and Earth Charter Initiative
  • Has advanced knowledge about ethical reasoning in utilitarianism, duty ethics, virtue ethics, discourse ethics, and responsibility ethics
  • Has in-depth insight into dialogical methods as means for cultural change

Skills

  • Can be critical towards and reflect on different ethical perspectives and use these to identify, analyze and implement practical solutions to ethical challenges related to the interaction between business, society and nature
  • Has great ability to reflect on complex issues and value conflicts based on multidisciplinary perspectives
  • Can conduct research and prepare ethically reflected solutions for sustainable development with relevance to business and society
  • Can independently use methods for future research in professional development work

General competence

  • Can communicate the relevance of ethical issues and reflections to other academics and the general public
  • Has the ability to make better decisions, handle conflicts and stimulate collaboration
  • Can actively participate in the public debate on how business, public administration and individuals can contribute to change towards sustainable development
  • Can contribute to the design of long-term visions for how sustainable development in economics, society and nature can be implemented in practice
Paid semester fee and syllabus literature. It is also required that students have a laptop at their disposal.
Compulsory
Alternation between lectures, group work/case discussions, practical exercises, presentations, and dialogue-based methods, where the students have an active role in the teaching.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the universitys quality assurance system.
