Research and Writing

ME120L

Research and Writing is a course designed to acquaint the student with scholarly research methods, as well as familiarize them with the proper format for scholarly writing in the humanities. A major part of the course will be spent on an introduction to current thought in Critical Theory. In order to facilitate the development of graceful written English, there will be an extensive reading load of various literary and scholarly texts.

This course is intended for students who wish to teach English at a high-school level, students who are enrolled in the Bachelor of English programme, students who desire to pursue their English studies beyond the one-year programme level, and students who simply desire to learn how to write and argue persuasively and elegantly.

Knowledge:

The student shall:

  • have knowledge of textual structure and linguistic devices and of critical and analytical approaches to both literary and non-literary texts
  • have knowledge of textual genres and their characteristics, as well as norms for the production of academic texts and the responsible use of sources
  • have knowledge of contemporary literary theory

Skills:

The student can:

  • use English confidently and functionally, both orally and in writing, appropriate to the audience in different situations
  • analyze and write research-based articles on literary texts, as well as employing relevant and precise terminology in the engagement with texts
  • explore the social, historical, and cultural history of English-speaking countries
  • work independently with various topical problems

General competence:

The student can:

  • maintain and develop their own linguistic competence
  • gather and critique research independently
  • work in groups to edit student-produced texts
No special costs except syllabus literature.
Compulsory for students in Bachelor of English and English One Year Programme. The course is also offered as an elective outside of these programmes. 
The teaching will be part lectures and part seminars. There will also be time dedicated to guidance outside of class.
There will be an internal evaluation of the course in the middle of the semester and at the end of term. In addition we ask that the students take part in the centrally administered evaluation at the end of term.

Compulsory participation (OD): Attendance (85%): comprises 0/100 grading scale Approved / Not Approved

Assessment task (AK): 3 written tasks and 1 oral presentation, grading scale Approved / Not Approved, comprises 0/100 of the grade

Compulsory participation and assessment tasks must be approved to receive the final grade. 

Take-home examination (HJ):  a two-week home exam , comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale A - F
